Summary of the presentation:
Approximately three years ago Olathe Medical Center was asked to work in conjunction with the Deaf Cultural Center to develop the Deaf Health Literacy Task Force.
This task force currently coordinates quarterly Deaf Community Health Series workshops. One of the topics in 2016 was “Access to Care/Cardiac & Stroke within the Deaf population”. Our team from Olathe Medical Center was honored when KAD asked us to expand our presentation for this year’s conference.
Join presenters Jana Bracklow, Critical Care RN, Nicholas Mull, RN Manager of Emergency Care Center, and Jenny Mahieu, Language Access Manager for an interactive presentation covering the following topics:
· “Access to Care”
o Where to go when you are not feeling well. A brief overview and comparison of Family practitioners walk –in health centers, and Emergency Care centers.
· “Stroke & Cardiovascular Health in the Deaf Population”
o We will review the interesting results of a large research study completed in 2012 in Chicago regarding the Deaf population. Part of this research shows that Deaf individuals have more cardiovascular risks than the general population that are believed to be related to the disparities in cardiovascular health knowledge.
o We will also review a report from Sinai Health System on Recommendations of Improving Access to Health Care for the Deaf Community. The pre
· “Stroke Signs, Symptoms, Care and what to expect from a medical provider”
o How do some symptoms of a stroke present differently in Deaf individuals?
o What is Apraxia, Aphasia, and Dystextia?
o What are the differences in left sided or right sided strokes?
o Why TIME is one of the most important issues regarding stroke
· Information regarding Johnson County, KS TEXT 911 process.
We promise to provide an informative and fun interactive presentation that will allow participants to share their own cardiac and potential stroke health concerns. Participants will learn to apply different tactics to specific cardiovascular health conditions. The presentation will touch on topics and information that are not only important for the Deaf Community, their friends and family, but interpreters working in the medical setting.
